What is structured cabling

If you are familiar with the data cabling industry, you may have heard quite lot of the term about structured cabling.Structured cabling is used to create reliable, flexible data networking options to a wide variety of sources, so it needs to be carefully planned and put into place to ensure this will happen.

So, what is it?In simple terms, structured cabling is a cabling infrastructure that contains a variety of cables and hardware to create a system which can be relied upon for data transmissions. This can be anything from telephones to computers, anything that can transmit a communications data signal. The aim of the system is to provide a reliable system of communication.

Why would a company want to ensure they have their data system installed using a structured cabling infrastructure? There are many benefits to doing this, some which are more obvious than others. The main reason to using this infrastructure is that it reduces the length of time the system may be down due to human error.

Without a vast array of long cables which can easily get tangled, pulled loose or simply disconnect easily, the network is much easier to maintain. This means that if something does go wrong, it is generally easier to find.

If there’s no structured cabling in place, you are often running the risk of the main elements of your data system overheating. Components such as switches are often completely full of various connectors and their accompanying wires, which can affect the airflow around the component and cause it to overheat, posing not only a risk to the reliability of the system, but increasing the fire risk, too.
